Dry eyes occur when the tear film layer that coats and protects the cornea, or outer window of the eye, is no longer sufficient. Often times people complain that their eyes are red, irritated and feel dry. They might also express that their eyes are constantly watering or difficult to open in the morning. Many factors can play a part in causing dry eyes. In this book we will focus on efforts to improve dry eyes through nutrition.
MGD occurs when the meibomian glands in the eyelids are blocked and unable to release enough of the essential oily layer of the tear film that coats and protects the front surface of your eye. Without enough of this essential oil, the tear film evaporates, leading to chronic dry eye. Treatments like iLux, and warm compresses can be helpful.
Aside from diet, other treatments might include vitamin supplements of omega 3 oils, increased water consumption and prescription eye drops and in office therapy like iLux
Fish, fish, fish! Salmon, Mackerel and Tuna are top choices for Omega 3 fatty acid consumption.
Flax Oil is loaded with Omega 3's and is an excellent supplement used for those with Dry Eyes.
Stay Hydrated. If you want to help your eyes from feeling dry, step 1 is to drink enough water and keep your body hydrated.
Snacks like sunflower seeds are a good source of Omega 3's. Sunflower Oil can also be used in cooking
Avocados provide Vitamin E and Omega 3's. Avocados are an excellent food choice!
Walnuts, Almonds and Peanuts are good Sources of Vitamin E
Make a habit of eating the right foods to help your eyes feel fantastic.
Drink enough water to stay hydrated. Reduce caffeine consumption and replace with H2O
Warm moist compresses over the closed eyes often times helps with oil secretion of the eyelids and helping with dry eye symptoms.
A humidifier in dry climates can be helpful for those that suffer from Dry Eye. Wearing a Dry Eye night mask can also be very helpful.
Over the counter lubricating Artificial Tears are often our first line of Treatment. Products like Sysane from Alcon have many options for differing levels of Dry Eye.
Punctual Plugs are small plugs inserted into the tear ducts the reduce or prevent tears from draining from the surface of the eye. The goal is to achieve a fuller tear film and reducing dry eye symptoms
Optometrists and Ophthalmologists can prescribe eye drops for treating symptoms and causes of Dry Eyes
